You will have two families: one of birth, one of choice
“Children find comfort in flaws, ignorance and insecurities similar to their own .
I loved my Mother most for letting me see hers.” Erma Bombeck
What is the importance of family? We all want to belong and feel accepted.
The bond of family gives us a beginning in life, and sets the tone for our future. Psychologists still debate genetics versus environment, and which one has the greater impact on personality development. Dr. Lawrence Vogel, who helped to found the Family Division of APA, believed that the birth family is our greatest teacher. Through these complex relationships, we learn how to love, forgive and communicate our feelings.
This is an excerpt from “Things your parents never told you, and you wish they had.” If you have life lessons you have learned on your own, please share them on this blog with writer, Georgie Rhein.
